Amnat Charoen

Amnat Charoen is one of Thailand's four newest provinces, carved from Ubon Ratchathani on 12 January 1993, and covers just 3,290 km² in the Mekong valley of central Isan. With a population of around 372,000, it is among the least populous provinces in the region and is known locally as the 'Land of Dharma'.

The province is situated between the Lam Sae Bok and Lam Sae Bai rivers, with the Mekong forming a distant eastern boundary; in the dry season, receding river levels reveal temporary islands in the Mekong that attract seasonal visitors. Agriculture dominates the economy, with an estimated 883,000 rai under jasmine rice cultivation and significant expansion in sugarcane; an organic 'Dhamma agriculture' initiative promotes self-sufficient farming based on Buddhist principles. Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park, shared with neighbouring Mukdahan and Yasothon provinces, features lotus-filled ponds and unusual sandstone formations. The provincial capital is home to a 20-metre standing Buddha image, Phra Mongkol Ming Muang, which is a focus of religious devotion. Amnat Charoen is predominantly inhabited by the Phu Thai ethnic group, renowned for their traditional Khit weaving patterns.
