Mae Hong Son

Mae Hong Son is Thailand's westernmost and most mountainous province, tucked into the Shan Hills along the Myanmar border and nicknamed 'the city of three mists.' With only 23 people per km², it has the lowest population density of any Thai province.

Mae Hong Son covers 12,765 km² of forested highland terrain in upper northern Thailand, with forest blanketing roughly 85.5% of the province. The landscape is dominated by the Shan Hills range, whose valleys and ridges trap moisture and create the misty conditions that define the region. The province's diverse population includes Shan, Karen, Hmong, and other hill-tribe communities, who together account for the majority of residents. Doi Mae Ya, rising to 2,005 metres, is the highest point, and the border with Myanmar stretches 483 km along both land and river. The provincial capital's twin lakeside temples, Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang, reflected in Jong Kham Lake, are among northern Thailand's most photographed sights.
