Phang Nga

Phang Nga is a province in southern Thailand on the Andaman Sea coast, renowned for its dramatic limestone karst towers rising from Phang Nga Bay and its offshore island groups including the Similan and Surin islands. The province takes its name from an ancient Malay term meaning 'jungle', reflecting its forested and mountainous interior.

Phang Nga Province covers an area of approximately 4,171 square kilometres, with around 32 percent remaining under forest cover, and had a registered population of approximately 266,296 as of 2023. Phang Nga Bay, spanning about 400 square kilometres, is the province's most iconic feature — its vertical karst pinnacles, mangrove-lined shores, and sea caves have made it a UNESCO-recognised natural area and a centrepiece of Thai tourism. The Similan Islands, located about 84 kilometres offshore, are consistently rated among the world's top scuba diving sites for their coral reefs and clear water. The province was severely affected by the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, particularly along its northern Khao Lak coastline. Beyond coastal tourism, Phang Nga retains significant rubber and palm oil agriculture in its inland districts.
