Mukdahan Province

Mukdahan is a province in upper northeastern Thailand on the Mekong River, connected to Savannakhet province in Laos by the Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge opened in 2006. Elevated to provincial status in 1982, it is home to eight distinct ethnic communities including Phu Thai, Thai Yo, and Thai Saek peoples.

Covering approximately 4,340 square kilometres, Mukdahan borders Amnat Charoen and Yasothon to the south, Roi Et and Kalasin to the west, Sakon Nakhon to the north, and the Mekong to the east. The western portion of the province is dominated by the Phu Phan Mountains, whose dense forests account for about 33 percent of the provincial area. The city of Mukdahan was founded in 1770 by Lord Chanthakinnaree of Phonsim, and its riverside promenade and Indochina Market are popular with Thai and Lao shoppers. Phu Pha Thoep National Park, with its distinctive mushroom-shaped sandstone rock formations, and Kaeng Kabao rapids are the province's signature natural attractions. The Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, spanning 1,600 metres, is a key logistics link on the East-West Economic Corridor connecting Vietnam's Da Nang port to Myanmar.
