Si Sa Ket

Si Sa Ket province occupies 8,936 km² in lower northeastern Thailand and is home to around 1.44 million people from four main ethnic groups — Kui, Lao, Khmer, and Yer. The province shares a long border with Cambodia and contains some of the most significant Khmer ruins found in Thailand.

The landscape of Si Sa Ket is defined by the Mun River valley to the north and the Dangrek mountain chain along the Cambodian frontier to the south, with forests covering roughly 11.5 percent of the land. Numerous Khmer temples indicate the area held considerable importance to the empire by at least the 12th century; the most striking, Prasat Prang Ku in Prang Ku District, dates to the late 12th or early 13th century and is surrounded by a large pond famous for waterfowl. Khao Phra Wihan National Park, bordering Cambodia, provides a gateway to the cliffside temple of Preah Vihear — though formally in Cambodia, the site is far more accessible as a day excursion from Si Sa Ket. The province earned a geographical indication registration in 2020 for its garlic and shallots, which are signature agricultural products. The diverse ethnic composition of Si Sa Ket makes it one of the most culturally layered provinces in Isan.
