Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi is Thailand's third-largest province and lies in the west, bordering Myanmar along the Tenasserim Hills. It is world-famous for the Death Railway and Bridge on the River Kwai built by Allied POWs and Asian labourers during the Second World War, and for its extraordinary natural scenery.

Covering approximately 19,483 square kilometres, Kanchanaburi is dominated by forested mountains, river valleys, and numerous national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. The Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai Rivers converge at Kanchanaburi city to form the Mae Klong River, providing the scenic river setting that attracted wartime infrastructure and today attracts tourists. Thung Yai Naresuan and Huai Kha Kaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries, straddling the western border, together constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their extraordinary biodiversity. Erawan National Park, famous for its seven-tiered emerald-green waterfall, is one of Thailand's most visited national parks. The province is also home to Sai Yok Yai Waterfall, Three Pagodas Pass on the Myanmar border, and some of the largest intact tracts of monsoon forest in Southeast Asia.
