Phichit

Phichit is a quiet agricultural province in lower northern Thailand, about 330 kilometres north of Bangkok, lying on the low fertile plains where the Nan and Yom Rivers converge. Rice and lotus are the predominant crops, and the province is virtually without significant forest cover.

Phichit covers 4,531 square kilometres and is bordered by Phitsanulok to the north, Phetchabun to the east, Nakhon Sawan to the south, and Kamphaeng Phet to the west. The Nan and Yom Rivers flow through the province, joining shortly before the formation of the Chao Phraya River further south. The landscape is almost entirely flat alluvial plain, with forest amounting to less than one percent of the provincial area. Phichit is locally famous for the legend of Chalawan, a mythical crocodile king, and crocodile-themed crafts and festivals remain part of the local identity. The province is divided into 12 districts with a population of around 530,000 people, most of whom are engaged in rice cultivation.
