Rayong

Rayong is an eastern Thailand province bordering the Gulf of Thailand to the south, renowned for both its white-sand beaches and its pivotal role as the centre of Thailand's petrochemical and automotive industries. As of 2016, Rayong recorded the highest per-capita income of any Thai province.

The province is bounded by Chon Buri to the west, Chanthaburi to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the south, with a landscape that transitions from hilly terrain in the north to low coastal plains and a 100-km shoreline dotted with beaches and islands. Map Ta Phut, located within Rayong, is the site of Thailand's largest petrochemical and heavy-industry estate, operated in conjunction with the Eastern Economic Corridor linking Rayong, Chon Buri, and Chachoengsao. Fishing remains the backbone of the rural economy, and Rayong is the leading producer of nam pla (fish sauce) in Thailand. The island of Ko Samet, within Rayong's boundaries and protected as a national park, draws visitors with its bright white quartz-sand beaches and clear turquoise water. Rayong city itself, the provincial capital, is a compact commercial centre with a lively market and riverside temples.
