Udon Thani City
Udon Thani city is the capital of Udon Thani Province and the sixth-largest city in Thailand, with an urban population of around 400,000. It is one of the four major cities of the Isan region and a key gateway to Laos via Nong Khai and the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge.
The city grew significantly during the 1960s and 1970s when the United States operated Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base nearby, an expansion that transformed it into a modern commercial centre with a cosmopolitan character unusual for the region. Today, Udon Thani is served by an international airport with direct flights to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Guangzhou, making it a popular base for travellers exploring the upper northeast. Central Udon Thani features Nong Prajak Park, a large urban lake park, and Udon Thani Cultural Centre. The city is a notable hub for expat residents and for cross-border trade with Laos. Udorn Sunshine Orchid Farm and the annual Udon Thani International Marathon draw visitors throughout the year.
