Uthai Thani
Uthai Thani is a province in lower northern Thailand stretching from the upper Chao Phraya River plains westward into forested mountains bordering Tak province. It is home to Huai Kha Kaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its biodiversity.
Uthai Thani covers approximately 6,730 square kilometres and is bordered by Nakhon Sawan to the north, Chai Nat to the east, Suphan Buri and Kanchanaburi to the south, and Tak to the west. The Sakae Krang River, a tributary of the Chao Phraya, is the main watercourse flowing through the provincial capital, Mueang Uthai Thani, situated about 200 kilometres north of Bangkok. Huai Kha Kaeng Wildlife Sanctuary in the west, combined with Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary in adjacent Kanchanaburi, forms the largest conservation area in mainland Southeast Asia and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The province has a small population of around 330,000, with an economy largely based on agriculture, fishing in the reservoir, and timber. Wat Tha Sing (Wat Chantaram) on an island in the Sakae Krang River is a celebrated temple reached by a Mon-style wooden bridge.
