Si Satchanalai

Si Satchanalai, meaning 'City of Good People,' lies on the banks of the Yom River about 55 kilometres north of Sukhothai city. The Si Satchanalai Historical Park encompasses the ruins of the ancient city along with the older Chaliang settlement, protecting dozens of temple complexes and the remains of a palace. In the 13th and 14th centuries it was the second most important city of the Sukhothai Kingdom, and it was famed for its Sangkhalok kilns that produced distinctive glazed ceramics traded throughout Southeast Asia. A five-metre-high defensive wall was constructed in the 16th century to resist Burmese incursions. The park was officially opened in 1988 and declared a World Heritage Site together with Sukhothai and Kamphaeng Phet on 12 December 1991.
