Chaiyaphum

Chaiyaphum province covers 12,698 km² at the western margin of Isan where the Khorat Plateau meets the Phetchabun mountain range, making it roughly half forested uplands and half agricultural plateau, with a population of approximately 1.1 million. It is distinguished by six national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, and by seasonal fields of Siam tulips that bloom across Pa Hin Ngam National Park each July and August.

Bordering Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Lopburi, and Phetchabun, Chaiyaphum occupies a transitional landscape where the Isan plateau rises into the Phetchabun Range, with the highest point reaching 1,222 metres. Pa Hin Ngam National Park in the southwest is named for its striking sandstone formations carved by erosion — 'hin ngam' meaning 'beautiful stone' — and draws visitors from across Thailand when Curcuma alismatifolia (Siam tulips) paint the park floor in pink and purple during the rainy season. Phu Khiao Wildlife Sanctuary, covering 1,560 km², protects one of the largest intact forest blocks in Isan and shelters elephant, gaur, and tiger populations. Most of the population are ethnically Lao and speak the Lao language; rice, tapioca, sugarcane, and taro are the chief agricultural products. The Chulabhorn Dam, named after a princess, provides critical irrigation for the province's farming communities.
