Lamphun

Lamphun is the smallest province in northern Thailand, situated 26 km south of Chiang Mai in the Ping River valley, and is regarded as the heartland of the ancient Mon kingdom of Hariphunchai. Its golden chedi at Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, enshrining a hair relic of the Buddha, has drawn pilgrims since 897 CE.

Covering just 4,478 km², Lamphun is hemmed in by the Thanon Thong Chai Range to the west and the Khun Tan Range to the east, with forests accounting for 57.8% of its area. The province had a registered population of 396,753 in 2024 and sits 670 km north of Bangkok. Lamphun's historic core preserves the legacy of Queen Chamadevi, the semi-legendary founder of Hariphunchai, whose name is attached to Wat Chamthewi with its distinctive Dvaravati-style pyramidal chedi. The province is also renowned for its longan fruit, with the annual Lamphun Longan Festival drawing visitors from across northern Thailand. Doi Khun Tan National Park, straddling the Lamphun-Lampang border, protects the forested ridgeline above the Khun Tan Railway Tunnel, the longest in Thailand.
